A drink-driver who killed a man after crashing off a Warwickshire road has been jailed.
Chloe Bannister, of Chaytor Drive, Nuneaton, was driving a Mercedes GL50 along Coppice Lane in Middleton, between Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth, on the night of Wednesday, 15 November 2023. She failed to negotiate a bend at around 10.30pm and crashed through a fence into a field.
The 33-year-old male passenger, from Cheshire, sustained serious head injuries. He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene and was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Tragically, he died from his injuries the following day. Bannister was also taken to Good Hope Hospital.
Bannister was found to be almost one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit at the time of the crash. She was arrested and later charged with causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The 29-year-old admitted the charge and appeared before Warwick Crown Court on Friday, 11 April, where she was sentenced to two years in prison. She was also banned from driving for five years and fined.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Sam Bates from Warwickshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“Chloe Bannister’s irresponsible and reckless actions on the night of the collision have left a family heartbroken with the loss of their son, brother and uncle.
“The tragic result of her actions should serve as a stark reminder to all drivers of the lawful and moral responsibility incumbent on us all when driving.”
