Research conducted by Direct Line Insurance has revealed that up to a million older motorists have failed to disclose important medical information to the DVLA. The reason they have given is that they have not seen such disclosure as being important to their ability to drive.
The research suggests that around 30% of drivers over the age of 65 who have notifiable conditions such as eye sight and health problems such as diabetes and epilepsy, only half have made disclosures to the DVLA.
In fact it is not an issue purely for the more mature motorist as it is thought that almost 10% of all drivers have conditions that effect their driving and have not disclosed it.
The Director of Motor at Direct Line, Gus Park stated: “Regardless of age, drivers that have a notifiable or worsening medical condition or disability must disclose this to the DVLA and also to their insurer to stay within the law.”
He continued: “Even those who feel their physical status won’t affect their driving must still disclose their condition, as failing to do so means they risk a hefty fine and even prosecution if they have an accident.”
