Introduction

The Incident
According to a report by Western Telegraph, the former university lecturer, identified as Gillian Swaine, was stopped by police officers on Freemans Way in Haverfordwest. The police had received a call from a member of the public who suspected that Swaine was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police Involvement
Upon locating the Nissan Qashqai that Swaine was driving, officers requested her to pull over. The police officers detected the smell of alcohol as soon as they stopped the vehicle. A roadside breath test was conducted, which proved positive for alcohol.
Legal Proceedings
Swaine was taken to the Haverfordwest custody suite for further intoximeter tests, which showed she had 50 mcg of alcohol in her breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 mcg. She was represented in court by Mr Tom Lloyd, who informed the magistrates that Swaine is suffering from hereditary liver failure, affecting her body’s ability to break down alcohol.
Penalties and Sentencing
After considering the facts, the magistrates disqualified Swaine from driving for 12 months. She was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £48 surcharge.
Additional Context
Swaine had no previous convictions and had been on sick leave since January 2022 due to her hereditary illness. She had been a university lecturer prior to her illness.
