This article explores the UK’s first free-standing AI road safety camera, which has been deployed on one of Devon and Cornwall’s busiest roads. The camera utilises state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology to detect traffic offences such as mobile phone use and not wearing seatbelts.
Initial Success
According to RAC, the camera has been an immediate success, detecting almost 300 drivers committing offences within the first three days of its operation. Specifically, it detected 117 mobile phone and 180 seat belt offences.
Technology Behind the Camera
The camera has been implemented by road safety tech firm Acusensus, in partnership with Vision Zero South West. It employs artificial intelligence to identify mobile phone and seatbelt offences. This is the first time such a system has been used in the UK.
Location and Deployment
The camera is currently located on the A30 near Launceston. It is part of a larger initiative by Vision Zero South West, a group of organisations aiming to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in Devon and Cornwall to zero.
Human Review and Conviction
All images captured by the camera are reviewed by a human before being used as part of a conviction. This ensures that the technology is being used responsibly and accurately.
Future Plans
The aim is to expand the project and provide constant monitoring of some of the region’s most used roads. Adrian Leisk, Head of Road Safety for Devon & Cornwall Police, emphasised the importance of this technology in sending a clear message to drivers about the consequences of using a phone while driving.
