Proposals have been discussed that could see enhanced drink-driving deterrents introduced during the festive period, with measures aimed at reducing alcohol-related road incidents over the Christmas season.
Research from a motorists’ organisation indicates that a significant proportion of drivers support the introduction of alcohol interlock devices (alcolocks) in vehicles, which would prevent a car from starting unless the driver meets the legal alcohol threshold. Such devices are already used in several other countries.
Under current UK drink-driving laws, drivers caught over the prescribed alcohol limit can face a range of penalties. These include up to six months’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine, a £2,500 penalty, or a minimum 12-month driving ban.
Supporters of alcolocks argue that the measures would add an additional safeguard beyond existing sanctions, particularly to prevent repeat offenders from driving while impaired. Public surveys referenced in the discussion suggested that many motorists, including younger drivers, favour the introduction of such devices.
The Department for Transport has indicated that road safety remains a priority and that technology which could improve compliance with drink-driving laws will continue to be assessed. A new THINK! campaign has also been launched to raise awareness of the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
These discussions come amid broader enforcement efforts, including regional police campaigns targeting drink and drug driving during peak periods for road travel.
