UK Experts Call for More Enforcement to Curb Drink-Driving

Jul 24, 2023

The British Medical Association’s recent motion to reduce the drink-driving limit in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland has garnered support from road safety experts. The call aims to bring the current limit of 80mg per 100 millilitres of blood or 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath down to levels seen in countries like Scotland, where the limit is 50mg per 100 millilitres of blood.

Studies have shown that drivers with a blood alcohol concentration between 50mg and 80mg are six times more likely to be involved in fatal road traffic accidents than those with zero blood alcohol. Experts believe that lowering the drink-drive limit is crucial for road safety.

However, research from Scotland, which reduced its limit to 50mg/100ml in 2014, did not find a significant drop in road traffic accidents related to alcohol. Experts suggest that enforcement plays a critical role in curbing drink-driving incidents. The success of law changes in other countries has been associated with effective enforcement measures.

The lack of random breath tests in the UK hampers enforcement efforts, as police need to have reasonable suspicion before conducting tests. The combination of lowering the limit and enhancing enforcement is expected to have the greatest impact on road safety.

Road safety advocates emphasise the importance of public awareness regarding alcohol limits, as people often miscalculate the amount of alcohol they can consume before driving. Factors like body weight, food consumption, sleep, and exercise can influence alcohol levels in the body.

Ultimately, the message remains clear: it is safest not to mix alcohol and driving. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving ability, so opting for non-alcoholic alternatives when planning to drive is the best approach to ensure road safety.
