A takeaway delivery driver who had “a couple of pints” at the pub after work was caught drink-driving on his way home.
Gary Ashbridge, aged 36, was driving a red Seat Leon on Curzon Street in Maryport when he was stopped by police at 12:30am on 23 March.
Peter Kelly, prosecuting at Workington Magistrates’ Court, said the officer had observed Ashbridge’s vehicle parked outside a pub earlier in the evening.
Ashbridge was asked to provide a roadside breath sample, which returned a positive result. He was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station, where further breath tests recorded a reading of 63 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.
Ashbridge, who represented himself in court, said:
“I was delivering for a local takeaway. I finished work at half 11, had a couple of pints, then got in my car.
“I’m going to the job centre straight after this to find other means of work.”
Ashbridge, of Ewanrigg Road, Maryport, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with excess alcohol.
Magistrates imposed a 17-month driving ban, which can be reduced by 17 weeks if he successfully completes a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
Ashbridge was also fined £530, ordered to pay £85 in costs, and a £212 victim surcharge.
