A 21-year-old man has been handed a suspended jail sentence after dangerous driving and leading police on a high-speed chase, but officers from Greater Manchester Police say he’s far from the only one.
PC Tom Berry said: “[The defendant’s] level of driving that day was nothing short of appalling.
“He had ample opportunity to stop his car and pull over, but he chose not to do so, prioritising his escape from the police over the safety of everybody else.
“It is only thanks to the teamwork and professionalism of the officers involved that the pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion resulting in [him] being caught and arrested.”
The court also heard that as officers tried to make the arrest, the defendant reversed and shunted a police car before speeding off again, and was eventually caught once he tried to escape on foot.
The Greater Manchester Police Roads Unit has said the arrest is just one example of how they are making road safety across Bolton and the wider city region a “top priority”, with PC Berry noting that this was just one of many dangerous drivers the team had prevented from getting behind the wheel again.
“Making Greater Manchester’s roads a safer is a top priority for GMP, and this is just one example of the hundreds of arrests made this year by the Roads Policing Unit.
“The Roads Policing Unit will continue to target those drivers who are unlicenced, uninsured and driving under the influence of drink and drugs.”
After pleading to dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, and failing to stop, the man was sentenced to 14 months in prison, suspended for two years. He must also complete 200 hours of unpaid work with a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement, and banned from driving for four years.
