As the summer holidays kick off, the UK is bracing for a massive influx of holidaymakers, resulting in potential traffic chaos and delays. According to the RAC, approximately 12.6 million leisure trips are expected to take place by road between Friday and Monday, leading to “bumper-to-bumper traffic.” Alongside road congestion, ports are anticipating delays due to increased tourist traffic and heavy freight movement.
The worst day for congestion is likely to be Friday, as schools in England and Wales break up for summer, prompting holidaymakers to embark on day trips or vacations by car. Transport analysis company Inrix identified several traffic hotspots, including the M5 south from near Bristol (Junction 15) to Bridgwater (Junction 23), a popular route for those heading southwest. Additionally, delays are expected on the M25 clockwise between Junction 10 for the A3 to Kingston and Junction 6 for the A22 to East Grinstead.
To avoid long queues and traffic jams, drivers are advised to avoid major roads between late morning and early evening from Thursday to Sunday. Routes heading south and west are likely to face the longest queues, with the M5 southbound from Bristol being particularly congested. The RAC emphasised the importance of vehicle maintenance, especially during this time of increased breakdowns due to rising fuel prices.
Holidaymakers planning to sail from the Port of Dover should prepare for two-and-a-half-hour delays during peak hours on the first two Saturdays and Sundays of the summer holidays. The port authorities urge passengers to arrive up to three hours before their booked sailing to minimise disruptions.
Airports across the UK are also expected to be busy, but strikes by air traffic controllers pose a significant risk to hundreds of thousands of flights across Europe. Gatwick Airport workers, including baggage handlers and check-in staff, are set to stage eight days of strikes later this month, affecting travel plans.
Furthermore, the heatwave gripping several popular holiday destinations, including Spain, Italy, and Greece, is impacting vacations, with some British holidaymakers altering their plans due to extreme weather conditions.
