St Albans Man of 80 Spared Prison After Third Drink Driving Conviction

Jun 1, 2026

An elderly St Albans man has received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to drink driving whilst already disqualified, marking his third such conviction in three years.

The Offences

Anthony Thomas, 80, of Gurney Court Road, St Albans, was stopped by police on 3 December 2025 following a report from a member of the public. He pleaded guilty to driving over the legal alcohol limit, driving whilst disqualified, and driving without insurance.

Thomas had previously been convicted of drink driving in both 2022 and 2023, and was still serving a disqualification arising from those earlier matters at the time he was stopped.

Sentence

At St Albans Magistrates’ Court on 26 May 2026, Thomas was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and disqualified from driving for a further two years. The new ban will run consecutively to his existing disqualification, meaning he will not be eligible to drive until April 2031.

Police Response

Sergeant James Keene said: “Thomas has shown complete disregard for his disqualifications and continues to put lives at risk. If he drives again, he will go to prison — he must not drive for almost five years.”
