Speeding Motorist Was Also Found To Be Drug Driving

Feb 10, 2023

A man caught drug driving in South Wales was caught out because police had spotted him speeding a court has heard.

Prosecuting, David Thomas said: “An officer’s attention was drawn to the defendant after he was seen to be driving with excessive speed on the A4048.

“He was wearing a baseball cap and police noticed that he smelt strongly of cannabis and appeared to be intoxicated.

“The defendant said he had smoked cannabis that evening.”

A roadside drug swipe tested positive for the class B drug, and a later evidential sample following the 21-year-old’s arrest revealed him to have 2.5mcg cannabis per litre of blood. The legal limit for drug driving, to account for accidental exposure, is 2mcg.

Mitigating, Darren Bishop told Newport Magistrates: “He has no previous convictions and this is quite at the low level in terms of the reading.”

He also added that his client had just started a new job as a machine operator.

After pleading guilty to drug driving, magistrates banned the man from driving for 12 months and imposed a fine of £120. He must also pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
