A 25-year-old motorist with no licence from Fife has been banned from the roads after police caught him drug driving.
Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard that officers saw the defendant driving erratically and at excessive speed, but he then failed to pull over despite their vehicle being clearly marked and with flashing lights.
Prosecuting, Procurator fiscal depute Catherine Stevenson said: “Police officers followed the car and saw it increase in speed and mount the pavement on both sides of the road.
“They signalled for the car to stop but this was ignored by the accused.
“They continued to follow the car and it continued to increase speed, travelling along Paul Street in Lochgelly.
“Police officers saw the car at the junction with Paul Street and Erskine Street and saw the car lose control and collide with the rear offside of another vehicle and come to a halt.
“They (police) saw the accused alight from the vehicle and the accused stated: ‘I’m sorry, I have no licence. I have smoked loads today’.”
Further checks following the man’s arrest found him to only have a provisional driving licence.
Mitigating, Aimee Allan said her client accepted responsibility for his actions and was both “deeply regretful” and “embarrassed” by them. “He had been smoking cannabis and saw police and made the stupid decision to take off rather than pull over.”
Ms Allan also added that her client didn’t understand his cannabis use was a problem at the time of the incident, but as a result has committed to stop using the drug.
After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving and driving without a licence, Sheriff Francis Gill said: “It’s only a matter of good fortune there were not more serious consequences in respect of this.” before banning him from driving for 32 months. He must also complete 215 hours of unpaid work and was bound by a curfew between 7pm and 7am.
