Speeding Chef Caught Four Times In Three Days Also Banned For Drink Driving

Jul 23, 2021

A 45-year-old chef from West Norfolk has appeared before Kings Lynn Magistrates on multiple charges of speeding, plus another for drink driving.

While the separate offences occurred six months apart, it wasn’t until this week that the man received his sentence.

For the drink driving charge, on June 14, 2021, “Police were alerted by a third party regarding a silver BMW and the driver being potentially drunk,” said prosecutor Priscilla Afful-Mensah.

The defendant was stopped on the A149, telling officers he’d had a couple of glasses of wine with a meal in Cambridge. A roadside breath test found him to have 83mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.

Regarding his speeding, the court heard that he was caught twice on December 20, 2020, travelling at 75mph at 6.02am, and 71mph at 3.51pm. He was then clocked at 79mph on December 23 at 3.35am and 82mph 10 minutes later.

Mitigating, David Foulkes said his client’s drink driving offence occurred after a train journey to Cambridge from Kings Lynn, where he had left his car.

Foulks then explained that the defendant had originally booked a taxi to take him home, but cancelled it after he received a call stating that he would need his car the next morning.

“It seems that the taxi company or someone else at the station alerted the police to the fact Mr Bowman was driving away,” she said.

For the speeding offences, the court put 15 points on the man’s licence and banned him from the roads for 6 months under the totting procedure. He was also fined £415 with costs totalling £380.

After pleading guilty to drink driving, he was banned for 20 months – to run concurrently – and was fined £250. He must also pay £10 costs and a £66 victim surcharge.

His ban may be reduced on completion of the drink driving rehabilitation course.
