Sixteen-Month Ban For Drink Driving Trucker At Twice Limit

May 18, 2021

A lorry driver charged with drink driving after crashing into the central reservation of a busy dual-carriageway has been banned from the roads at Peterborough Magistrates Court.

Members of the public contacted police at around 10.30am on May 11 to report a lorry swerving across the A1M near Peterborough.

After pulling over the lorry, officers breathalysed the man and found him to be almost twice the legal drink driving limit of 35mcg alcohol per 100ml breath.

They found a coffee mug containing whiskey and coke in the cab of the vehicle, as well as an empty bottle of both whiskey and wine which he had thrown from his window.

The 40-year-old defendant, of no fixed address, admitted falling asleep at the wheel, causing him to swerve across the road, as well as drinking two whiskeys that morning.

Sergeant Sam Tucker, from Peterborough’s Southern Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “[The defendant] admitted having been drinking whiskey on the morning he was arrested, but felt he was fit to drive. Alcohol and tiredness can be a lethal combination on the roads, and for someone who drives professionally, there is absolutely no excuse for it.

“Thank you to those members of the public who called us to report concerns about the manner of driving, this information enabled us to stop [him] before any potentially serious collision occurred.”

After pleading guilty to drink driving, magistrates banned him from the roads for 16 months as well as ordering him to pay a total of £755 in fines, costs, and charges.
