Lancashire Police have revealed alarming figures showing that, on average, seven people are arrested every day for drink and drug driving offences in the county. Over the past 12 months, more than 2,600 arrests have been made, highlighting the persistent issue of impaired driving.
The arrests are part of Operation Virage, a targeted police initiative aimed at tackling drink and drug driving, particularly by repeat offenders. The operation has gained additional momentum this summer due to new funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner. This funding has allowed the force to increase its use of roadside testing and intelligence-based targeting to apprehend prolific offenders.
Superintendent Hassan Khan, Operations Manager for Lancashire Police, stated that the operation is vital for keeping the county’s roads safe. Daily roadside tests for both drugs and alcohol are a core part of the police strategy. In addition to enforcement, the campaign also includes public education through social media and other digital platforms, warning drivers of the severe consequences of driving under the influence.
The authorities are urging residents to report suspected drink or drug drivers anonymously, with the hope that increased vigilance can prevent accidents before they happen. In his statement, Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw reinforced the message that drink and drug driving is unacceptable and puts lives at risk. He emphasised the importance of either seeking help or facing the legal consequences, with the ultimate aim of making Lancashire’s roads safer for everyone.
