Sentencing Day For Ray Wilkins

Jul 26, 2016

Ex England Captain Ray Wilkins has been banned from driving for 4 years and given a suspended prison sentence.

Following a short adjournment from 18 July 2016, Ray Wilkins attended court from the Priory Clinic to enter his guilty plea to an allegation of drink driving.

Although Mr Wilkins had been required to attend court on the last occasion, his barrister has applied for a 6-week adjournment whilst he underwent treatment at the clinic.

The prosecution had objected to the adjournment as Mr Wilkins had attended the clinic voluntarily and was not receiving mental health treatment.

The court heard that Mr Wilkins was an alcoholic who had no choice other than to stay away from alcohol or risk ruining his life.

Mr Wilkins entered his guilty plea to an incident from 1 July 2016 where he was found to be 3 times over the legal limit for drink driving. That limit being 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Mr Wilkins had been pulled over by a member of the public who had seen his car weaving around the road.

He was also seen clipping a kerb and drinking from a bottle whilst he was driving behind the wheel

That member of the public then took Mr Wilkins’ car keys and telephoned the police.

Wilkins, who has 2 previous drink driving convictions was given a 10 week suspended prison sentence, 140 hours of unpaid work and a ban from driving for 4 years.

Wilkins told the court:”Abstinence is the only way I can cure this situation.”
