A man has been banned from the roads for three years after police caught him drug driving under the influence of cannabis.
The 36-year old stated he was “self-medicating” with cannabis to help him sleep.
Prosecuting, Justin Espie told Mold Magistrates that police stopped the defendant as they had spotted him towing a trailer without a number plate.
A roadside drug swipe tested positive for cannabis and a subsequent blood test found him to have 2.8mcg THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol – the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis) per litre of blood. The legal limit for drug driving is 2mcg.
Mitigating, Ceri Lews explained that her client suffered from ADHD and autistic spectrum disorder and added that his medication had been changed around the time of the offence.
He wasn’t sleeping well and was “self-medicating”.
Ms Lewis told the court: “He had a joint the night before to help him sleep.
“He didn’t drive until 1.10pm the next day and he felt ok, but he was over.
“He has made the decision that he won’t be driving again following the disqualification.
“He has scrapped the vehicle and has bought himself a bike.”
After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving, Deputy District Judge Paul Conlon imposed a £120 fine, banned him from driving for three years, as well as ordering the man to pay a £34 surcharge and £85 costs.
