New figures released have shown that just as many road traffic fatalities are caused by drug driving as drink driving.
The shock news comes from data collected from fatal road traffic accidents in Scotland, from 2012 to 2015. The figures show that just as many drivers were under the influence of cannabis as this under the influence of drink.
The news has led to road safety campaigners calling for better drug testing for motorists, similar to those tests being carried out in England and Wales.
This new research, published in Forensic Science International, is the first detailed study looking at road traffic fatalities and drugs in Scotland for around 20 years.
Lead author for the research, Hilary Hamnett stated: “Policy makers will compare themselves to other places and say we are doing better, but there are some Scandinavian countries, for example, that have this under control and have very low levels of drug use in their deceased drivers.”
