A 23-year-old sales rep has appeared before Manchester Magistrates after crashing into the back of a van while twice the legal drink driving limit.
Prosecuting, Tina Cunnane told the court that the collision happened in Bury on June 14.
“The defendant collided with a Renault van, the driver suffered some pain and neck discomfort,” she said.
“The police attended and it was clear from speaking to her that she was intoxicated.
“She was slurring her speech, unsteady on her feet and her eyes were glazed.
“The driver of the van had been stationary at the red traffic light and the defendant had a passenger in her vehicle.”
The prosecution added that a roadside breath test proved positive for alcohol, and further tests at the police station following her arrest found her to have 76mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.
During her interview with officers, she said she had been to a cricket club before visiting a bar in Bury. She crashed her car while driving between the bar and her friend’s house.
She admitted to drinking a full bottle of Prosecco, but when asked if she could have been over the limit, she replied “no”.
Representing herself, the woman told the court: “First of all I want to apologise – it’s completely out of character for me.
“I’ve driven for five years and had a full clean driving licence.
“It was genuinely just a silly mistake.”
After pleading guilty to drink driving, the Manchester magistrates banned her from driving for 19 months, imposed a £500 fine and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £50 victim surcharge.
