A man has appeared before Sheriffs in Jedburgh, Scotland, after he was caught drug driving.
The welder, from Hebburn, Tyne & Wear, was reported to the police due to the manner of his driving at around 5.10pm last January.
Following his arrest, he was taken to St Leonard’s Police Station in Edinburgh where he tested negative for alcohol. Police also performed a drug swipe, which also came back negative, but police were certain he had been driving under the influence of drugs as he was unsteady on his feet.
Finally, a blood sample revealed him to have more than 20mcg ketamine per litre of blood, putting him at over eight times the drug driving limit for the substance.
Mitigating, Ross Dow explained that his client, with no previous convictions, had been going through mental health issues, with a friend advising him to take the drug to help.
Sheriff Donald Ferguson told him: “This was an incredibly dangerous thing to do. Taking a drug of this type and then driving could have ended up as a catastrophic accident.”
After pleading guilty to drug driving, the man was banned from the roads for 18 months and ordered to pay an £800 fine plus a £40 victim surcharge.
