Repeat Drug Driving Offender Avoids Jail

Feb 17, 2023

A man who was caught drug driving while already banned from the roads has avoided jail.

Leicester Magistrates Court heard that the 23-year-old lost his licence barely five weeks before he was pulled over by police.

Prosecuting, Sally Bedford explained that the man’s disqualification came into effect on September 22, 2022, as a result of totting up sufficient points on his licence.

Police then spotted him driving a Volkswagen on October 30.

“The officers indicated for him to pull over and he readily submitted. He knew he was disqualified. A saliva test indicated he may well have drugs in his system,” said Ms Bedford.

Mitigating, Amjid Ibrahim told the court that his client told officers they would find both cannabis and cocaine in his system, adding: “He is very hard-working and looks after his elderly mum as his sole carer. He said he made a terrible mistake.”

Chairman of the bench Wendy Boneham said: “With the drugs and the driving whilst disqualified so soon after you were disqualified, this is incredibly serious. We considered custody – it was this close.

“It will be a community order because of your early guilty plea, your remorse and your responsibilities for your mother. If it hadn’t been for those, we would be sending you to prison.”

After pleading guilty to drug driving, the man was banned from the roads for a further 24 months and bound under a 12-month community order for 300 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
