A man has been sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court after leading police on a high-speed chase while drug driving.
The prosecution told the court that on January 13 the defendant failed to stop after police attempted to pull him over for driving at excessive speed. Officers also discovered that the car he was driving was linked to organised crime in South Yorkshire.
After speeding away at up to 90mph in a 40mph zone, the 42-year-old turned onto the M1 at Junction 34, driving the wrong way down the carriageway to avoid capture. The officers following deemed it too dangerous to continue their pursuit, however colleagues were able to bring him to a halt a little later.
PC Michael Ramsden told the court: “He was high on drugs and completely unremorseful of the danger he had posed to innocent road users.
“During the initial pursuit [the defendant] had driven through traffic lights and at speed, reaching 90mph on a 40mph road.
“During my pursuit with [him], he again attempted to go onto the wrong side of the M1.
“I used tactical contact to bring him and his vehicle to a stop, even then [he] still didn’t give in and attempted to run away.”
After pleading guilty to drug driving, dangerous driving, and other motoring offences, the man was sentenced to 18 months in prison and banned from the roads for three years and nine months. He must also pay a victim surcharge of £156.
