RAC Reminds Drivers Of The Dangers Of Drink Driving The Morning After

Dec 23, 2022

The RAC has released alarming figures showing an increase in the number of people who believe they may have been drink driving the morning after a night drinking.

Some 4% of the 3,000 surveyed said they think they have driven over the limit, however that figure rises to 8% in the 25-44 age group.

That same group is also more likely to be guilty of drink driving immediately after consuming alcohol, with 5% thinking they may have done so compared to 3% across all ages, and 3% said they had definitely done so, compared to 2% of the total.

The figures from the RAC’s 2022 survey show a slight rise in the number of people who think they may have been driving while under the influence, with 7% saying it was a possibility compared to 5% in 2021. This is still a substantial drop from before the pandemic, however, when 13% admitted to it in 2019, and 14% the year before.

Simon Williams, the RAC’s road safety spokesperson, said: “It is very concerning to see so many drivers aged 25-44 who think they have driven while drunk or who know they have, nearly double the figure for all drivers.”

Respondents were also asked for their opinions on measures that may do more to reduce drink driving.

An increase in the number of roadside breath tests drew the greatest support (54%), and 43% agreed that those convicted of the offence should have their vehicles fitted with alcolocks which would force them to provide a negative breath test before being able to start the vehicle.

Some 32% believed things should be taken a step further, with all vehicles having such devices as standard.

Over a quarter (27%) said drivers should be required to carry their own breathalysers so they can test themselves before getting behind the wheel. That figure rises to 39% among the under-25 age bracket.

Williams continued: “We strongly urge every driver to make the right decision when celebrating this Christmas, particularly the day after the night before.

“Just going to bed for a few hours won’t be enough to clear your system of alcohol, particularly if you’ve been drinking heavily at a work Christmas party until well gone midnight.

“It is far better to play it safe rather than taking an unnecessary risk that could change your life or, worse still, someone else’s.”
