Rising pollen counts can make the most beautiful summer days unbearable for some. Approximately 13 million people in the UK suffer hay fever to some degree and turn to over the counter or prescription products to ease their symptoms.
There has been a presumption, wrongly, that antihistamines, which are widely used in hay fever medication, are without side effects and has been one of the reasons why drug diving convictions have rocketed since the new law was introduced in March 2015.
A road side drug driving test is conducted by using a mouth swab and is able to assess the presence of both certain illegal drugs as well as prescription ones that may be impairing the driver.
It can be of no argument that drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking or taking recreational drugs may well be impaired when driving. However, it is becoming increasingly recognised that certain prescription drugs, such as strong painkillers and anti anxiety medication can cause similar symptoms.
It now appears that antihistamines can also cause drowsiness, blurred vision and slower reaction times.
You need to remember that although your medication may be perfectly legal, driving after taking it may be not.
There are number of practical solutions for hay fever that do not require any medication so the advice from GPs is get some medical advice on what the side effects of your medication is and should you be driving whilst taking it.
