Police Thank Public For Reporting Motorist Caught At Three Times Drink Driving Limit

Dec 6, 2022

A man has been jailed for drink driving at over three times the legal limit after members of the public contacted police to report him.

Peterborough Magistrates heard that a member of the public witnessed the defendant purchasing alcohol from a service station before drinking in his car, prompting a call to police who caught up to him just before 9pm on November 26.

Following the man they witnessed his vehicle weaving across the road and crossing toward the oncoming carriageway, travelling erratically at 20-35mph.

Despite bumping into the back of a police car as they pulled him over, the defendant denied drinking any alcohol in the previous 20 minutes. A breath test, however, found the 28-year-old to have 122mcg alcohol per 100ml breath – more than three times the legal drink driving limit of 35mcg.

A subsequent evidential sample following his arrest gave a reading of 113mcg per 100ml.

PC Martin Lobley, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: “We can’t be everywhere, but this case highlights we could be anywhere and that we do act on the information reported to us.

“We would like to praise the member of the public who raised their concerns about [the defendant] and provided details of the car he was driving.”

“Drink driving is one of the fatal five causes of collisions on our roads and if [this man] wasn’t stopped when he was, the consequences of his actions could have been much worse.

“People can help us make the roads safer for everyone by reporting drink or drug drivers.”

After pleading guilty to drink driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance, the man was sentenced to three months in prison and banned from driving for four years.
