A woman has been banned from driving after a drink driving accident which caused her to flip her car over.
The 35-year old pharmacist had been drinking brandy the evening before and gone to bed. When she awoke at 4am and got behind the wheel she didn’t realise she was still over the limit. On driving towards Chichester, she collided with three parked cars which turned her car onto its roof.
Police attended the scene of the accident where the woman failed a breathalyser test. Later analysis found her to have 114mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal drink driving limit is 35mcg.
After pleading guilty to drink driving, magistrates in Crawley banned her from driving for 23 months and ordered her to pay costs and charges totalling £303. She was also handed a community order with a rehabilitation activity requirement.
Investigating officer, PC Zachary Stout, of the Chichester Neighbourhood Response Team, said: “The defendant was remorseful for her actions, which she regrets. Nevertheless, she is aware she should never have attempted to drive while intoxicated.
“It is a common misconception that you’re fine to drive after a few hours’ sleep – this very much depends on how much alcohol you have consumed and how much time you’ve given yourself before driving.
“Alcohol stays in your system for several hours after you’ve stopped drinking, and if you’re in any doubt, don’t drive at all.
“You could end up in a situation like this, or worse still, you could kill yourself or someone else.”
