Paul Ince Receives 12-Month Driving Disqualification and Financial Penalties for Drink-Driving Offence

Jul 18, 2025

Paul Ince, former England international and Premier League footballer, has been disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay over £7,000 in fines and fees after pleading guilty to a drink-driving offence.

The 57-year-old appeared before Chester Magistrates’ Court on July 18, 2025, where he admitted to driving his Range Rover while over the prescribed alcohol limit on June 28 in Neston, Cheshire.

Court Ruling and Penalties

Presiding Judge McGarva delivered a firm message in sentencing, stating:

“The message has got to be: if you’re going to drive, you don’t drink at all.”

Ince was sentenced to the following:

  • 12-month driving disqualification

  • A £5,000 fine

  • A £2,000 statutory surcharge

  • £85 in court costs

The incident has not led to further criminal charges beyond the summary offence under road traffic legislation.

Public Appearance and Background

Despite the nature of the proceedings, Ince reportedly maintained a calm demeanor upon arrival, stopping to sign autographs and pose for photographs with members of the public outside court.

Paul Ince is a former midfielder who earned 53 international caps for England. His playing career included notable stints at West Ham United, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Liverpool. Post-retirement, he transitioned into football management, most recently leading Reading FC between 2022 and 2023.
