Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has begun its participation in Operation Limit, a co-ordinated festive campaign running from 1 December to 1 January, aimed at reducing the number of collisions and serious injuries linked to drink and drug driving.
The operation forms part of a nationwide effort supported by police forces across the UK to address impaired driving during one of the busiest periods on the roads. Officers in Greater Manchester will conduct roadside breathalyser and drug wipe tests throughout the campaign.
Checks will take place in all districts across the region and will also include enforcement of other key road safety offences, often referred to as the “Fatal Four” — including speeding, mobile phone use while driving, and failing to wear a seatbelt.
The operation supports the Vision Zero strategy of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which seeks to eliminate road deaths and life-changing injuries by 2040.
Data from the previous festive period shows that 570 motorists were arrested in Greater Manchester during a similar campaign, highlighting the scale of enforcement activity in the area.
Senior officers have reiterated a zero-tolerance approach to drink and drug driving. Alongside enforcement, educational engagement will be used where appropriate to raise awareness of road safety standards.
Drivers are encouraged to plan journeys responsibly this festive season and are reminded that assistance can be reported by contacting emergency services or, where relevant, through anonymous reporting channels.
