North Yorkshire Police Make 69 Arrests In Drink Driving Clampdown

Jun 24, 2016

North Yorkshire Police have reported that they have made 69 arrests for drink and drug driving in the first 2 weeks of their summer campaign.

These figures show a 41% increase in drink driving arrests and a 120% increase in drug driving arrests.

Out of the 69 arrests, some 9 of those have been for drink drivers who have given reading of over 100mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The current legal limit is 35mg.

The highest reading from the arrests was for a 45 year old female driver who have a reading of 150mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. Over 4 times the current legal limit for drink driving.

Of the arrests made, 22 were for drug driving and 17 of those were as a result of the new road side swab tests.

It was noted that the drug swab test kits were issued to North Yorkshire Police last year and can return a positive result within 10 minutes of the swab being used.

Commenting on the results of the campaign so far, Sgt Andy Morton of the Roads Policing Group said: “It’s disappointing to see that some people are choosing to ignore our message – drink and drug driving wrecks lives.

“It’s as simple as that, yet some still fail to grasp it and think that they won’t cause harm or be caught.

“If you choose to drink or take drugs and get behind the wheel, you are not only putting your own life at risk but the lives of innocent members of the public.

“The number of arrests made so far reflect the fact that North Yorkshire Police are out on the roads and are serious and committed to catching drink and drug drivers and bringing them to justice.”
