A Norfolk driver, David Wakefield, has been handed a three-year driving ban after confessing to drug driving.
The 30-year-old was intercepted by the police while driving a red Suzuki vehicle on Lynn Road, Castle Rising, due to concerns about his driving style. The incident occurred around 8:45 pm on October 31 of the previous year. Upon interacting with Wakefield, officers detected a potent cannabis aroma emanating from his vehicle.
Prosecutor Matthew Edwards informed the King’s Lynn Crown Court that Wakefield, who had been exceeding the speed limit, acknowledged his cannabis consumption and even surrendered the remaining substance. Additionally, he provided the police with a small bag of cannabis intended for personal use. A subsequent roadside drug test confirmed that Wakefield’s system contained cannabis levels exceeding the legal limit.
Wakefield, a resident of Winston Drive, South Creek, Lynn, appeared in court on August 9. He had previously admitted to drug driving, cannabis possession, and driving without third-party insurance.
Deputy circuit judge David Farrell underscored the potential lethal consequences of drug or alcohol-impaired driving. In addition to the driving ban, Wakefield was subjected to a two-year community order, encompassing 50 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR). He was also fined £100.
Defence counsel Lynne Shirley highlighted Wakefield’s prompt admission of the offences. She mentioned his ongoing mental health challenges but expressed his keenness to collaborate with the probation service.
