A woman drink driver who crashed her car following a police chase has narrowly avoided an immediate prison sentence.
The 30 year old driver, Jaimie McCarthy had been spotted driving erratically and without headlights.
The court heard that during McCarthy’s journey a male passenger had pulled her from the drivers seat and taken, so erratic was her driving.
However, a short time later McCarthy was behind the wheel again.
The police had been alerted by worried members of the public and they were soon following her, displaying their emergency lights and sounding the siren.
McCarthy did not stop, and drive at a variety of speeds between 27mph and 65mph.
She was also seen drifting her car into the path of oncoming traffic, just before she lost control and collided with a tree.
The court also heard that a child passenger in the car suffered a cut to their head which required plastic surgery.
McCarthy pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen.
The Judge imposed a 14 month prison sentence, suspended for 2 years.
In handing down the sentence, the Judge stated: “You are very lucky not to be receiving an immediate prison sentence.”
She was also disqualified from driving for 3 years.
McCarthy’s solicitor stated that she had now stopped drinking and said of her: “She felt she had to take over [driving]. It was clearly one of the worst decisions she has made in her entire life.”
