The national operation to tackle drink and drug driving during the Christmas period saw more than 56,000 tests conducted across the UK. This annual campaign, aimed at reducing the number of impaired drivers on the roads, yielded consistently high results for the second consecutive year.
South Wales Police, along with other forces across the country, played a significant role in the initiative. Officers conducted roadside checks and breathalyser tests, targeting drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The intensive operation was part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety during the festive season, a time notorious for higher incidences of drink and drug driving.
Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan of South Wales Police expressed his satisfaction with the operation’s outcomes. “The success of this campaign is a testament to the dedication of our officers and the support of the public. By removing impaired drivers from our roads, we have undoubtedly prevented numerous accidents and saved lives,” he stated.
The campaign’s high visibility and rigorous enforcement resulted in significant numbers of arrests and prosecutions. More than 1,500 individuals were charged with drink or drug driving offences, highlighting the ongoing issue of impaired driving and the need for continued vigilance.
Chief Inspector Morgan also emphasised the importance of public awareness and responsibility. “We urge everyone to think twice before getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs. The consequences can be devastating, not only for the driver but for innocent road users as well,” he added.
