A man from Eden has been issued with an interim driving ban after he was found to be driving while nearly three times over the legal alcohol limit on the M6 motorway.
Simon Peter Bissell, aged 39, was stopped by police on Saturday, 25 October, after a witness reported observing him consuming alcohol while driving. The vehicle, a Land Rover Discovery, was seen heading north near Shap and was described as swerving between lanes and veering onto the hard shoulder.
At the time of the incident, Bissell had a passenger in the vehicle. Carlisle’s Rickergate Magistrates’ Court heard that he was found to have 102 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit in England is 35 microgrammes.
The court was told that Bissell had recently returned to the UK from Saudi Arabia and was en route to a football match when he received a phone call from his wife informing him that she wished to divorce. Prosecutors stated that he subsequently made the decision to consume alcohol.
The magistrates were informed that Bissell recognised the seriousness of his actions and is currently seeking support. Sentencing has been adjourned until 15 December 2025 to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report by the Probation Service.
The duration of the driving disqualification will be confirmed at the time of sentencing. Bissell resides at The Crescent, West Houghton, Bolton, in the Westmorland and Furness area.
