A driver who required eight attempts to provide a roadside breath sample was found to be more than four times over the legal alcohol limit after being stopped on the M4, police said.
Vincent Lime, 36, from Corringham in Thurrock, was arrested at about 3pm on 6 December 2025 while travelling eastbound near junction 14 of the motorway. Police said officers were alerted after several members of the public reported concerns about the manner of his driving.
Footage released by police showed Lime’s Ford Fiesta swerving before officers brought the vehicle to a stop. Body-worn camera video then showed repeated attempts to complete a breath test at the roadside.
When a sample was eventually obtained, it recorded a reading of 148mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.
During the roadside test, Lime said: “I’m sorry.”
An officer responded: “It’s alright everyone’s a bit silly now and again don’t you worry.”
Police also established that Lime was driving on a provisional licence. The vehicle was seized at the scene, and Lime was later charged with driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and drink driving.
Lime appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to both offences. He was disqualified from driving for 30 months and ordered to pay £85 in Crown Prosecution Service costs and a £114 surcharge.
The arrest took place as part of Operation Limit, an initiative aimed at detecting and stopping drink or drug drivers before serious harm occurs.

“Lime’s manner of driving caused three members of the public travelling on the M4 at the same time to call 999 to report their serious concerns about the danger he posed to them and others. He was witnessed swerving across lanes, almost colliding at speed with other vehicles. Thankfully, officers managed to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. Lime was so intoxicated it took him eight attempts to provide a roadside breath test. This was a busy Saturday afternoon in December – the roads were understandably busy and I am actually amazed that he didn’t cause a serious collision. Drink or drug driving is not tolerated in Wiltshire and I cannot stress enough how important it is to plan your journey home if you’re planning on consuming alcohol of an evening – this includes any trips you are planning on making the following day when you could still be over the legal limit. Never get behind the wheel of a car if you think you may be over the limit. The risk is never, ever worth it.”
