Festival-goers are receiving important warnings about the potential consequences of operating a vehicle the morning after consuming alcohol. While the safest approach is to avoid driving altogether after consuming any amount of alcohol, the summer festival period poses a greater risk of exceeding the legal drink-drive limit.
As the Isle of Wight Festival kicks off, the Isle of Wight Council is taking steps to raise awareness of the dangers associated with driving the morning after drinking. Council officers, in collaboration with partners from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Safer Roads Partnership, have been actively promoting the Morning After calculator to drivers at the Lymington, Portsmouth, and Southampton ferry ports.
The calculator serves as a helpful tool for individuals to estimate the approximate time it takes for alcohol to leave their system, thus determining when it will be safe to drive the following morning. Lewis Campbell, the council’s road safety officer, clarified the purpose of the calculator, stating, “This calculator is not intended to help you work out how much you can drink on a night out before driving home. If you are drinking any amount of alcohol on a night out – even 1 drink – you should leave the car at home and make alternative arrangements. And the calculator won’t help you if you are arrested for drink driving.”
Campbell emphasised that the primary objective of the calculator is to assist individuals in calculating an estimated safe driving time after consuming alcohol the previous evening. Additionally, it can help determine when to cease alcohol consumption if driving is required the next morning. However, the council firmly believes that there is no safe limit for alcohol consumption when operating a vehicle.
It is crucial to recognise that drink driving is a severe criminal offence, and motorists found guilty can face fines, driving bans, and even imprisonment, depending on the seriousness of the offence. Furthermore, one doesn’t have to be caught driving a moving vehicle to face penalties. Being found sitting or sleeping in a car while under the influence and with keys in the ignition can result in a £2,500 fine, up to 3 months in prison, and a potential driving ban.
