Michael Adrian Hughes, a 55-year-old man from Willenhall near Walsall, faced a driving ban after admitting to drink driving in Welshpool. Hughes was apprehended on September 5 just outside Welshpool, following a tip-off from North Wales Police about a driver under the influence.
Upon being stopped by Dyfed Powys Police, Hughes, who was driving a Volkswagen vehicle, exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot, glazed eyes and the smell of alcohol on his breath. He told the officers that he had consumed one pint an hour earlier and was attempting to find his way back to the Midlands, having become lost in Mid Wales.
Prosecutor Helen Tench reported that although Hughes’ driving did not display any aggravating factors, he had a prior drink driving conviction, albeit over a decade old. Hughes’ breath test showed an alcohol level of 69 micrograms per 100 millilitres, almost double the legal limit of 35 micrograms.
Representing himself, Hughes, who is currently unemployed, spoke briefly in his defence. The magistrates at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court imposed a 19-month driving ban on Hughes, which could be reduced if he completes a drink drive rehabilitation course. Additionally, he was fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £48 surcharge.
