Manchester Man Banned After High-Speed Drink Driving Chase Through Oldham
A man has appeared before Manchester magistrates on drink driving and other charges after police caught him and two friends speeding through the streets of Oldham, narrowly avoiding a collision with two parked cars and nearly hitting one of the pursuing officers.
Prosecuting, Neil Ronan told the court that an officer spotted the man driving recklessly through “built-up” areas and would not stop when flagged to pull over.
The car regularly exceeded the speed limit through the residential streets, reaching up to 65mph, forcing one motorist to slam on their breaks to avoid a collision.
One passenger got out of the vehicle in the Derker area of the town and was promptly arrested by the officer in pursuit, with another police car continuing the chase. The driver was arrested after pulling into a cul-de-sac and being unable to continue.
Brian Williams, speaking in mitigation, said his client accepted the seriousness of the incident. He has two children from a failed relationship and was living at home with his mum, making efforts to improve himself.
He has nine previous convictions for eleven offences, but none related to this type of activity.
Presiding, Judge Tina Landale told the defendant that the consequences of his actions could have been far more serious.
“This was a really bad piece of driving made more serious that two passengers were in the car and you put their lives in danger as well as the police officer and two other drivers in danger, who had to take evasive action.
“It could have been so much more serious and someone could have died, thank God they did not.”
Judge Landale also accepted, however, that the man was attempting to better himself and believed he could be trusted to follow the orders of a suspended sentence.
After pleading guilty to drink driving, dangerous driving, and driving without licence or insurance, Judge Landale sentenced him to a concurrent eight-month jail term, suspended for two years. He was also bound by a curfew for two months and ordered to complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.
He was also banned from driving for three years and must pay a victim surcharge.
