Man Caught Drug-Driving After Release from Seven-Year Prison Sentence
Aiden Dowling, a 20-year-old from South Shields, has been caught drug-driving shortly after his release from a seven-year prison sentence. Dowling was stopped by police at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Simonside, South Tyneside, on September 19, where he was found to be over the legal limit for cannabis.
Dowling, who had been jailed as a teenager in May 2019 and released on licence in March 2022, was stopped by officers after they received information about the driver of an Audi. Upon stopping the vehicle, police noted Dowling’s glazed expression, bloodshot eyes, and the smell of cannabis both on his person and coming from the car. A roadside drug test confirmed the presence of cannabis in his system, with a reading of 4 micrograms per litre of blood, twice the legal limit of 2 micrograms.
Appearing before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, Dowling pleaded guilty to drug driving and was handed a one-year driving ban. He was also fined £383, ordered to pay a £153 victim surcharge, and £85 in court costs.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Dowling had been under a drug testing requirement since his arrest. Although he initially failed his first two tests, he has since tested negative, indicating a commitment to overcoming his drug issues.
Defence solicitor Alastair Naismith highlighted that there was no evidence of dangerous driving and that Dowling was not operating a commercial vehicle at the time of his arrest. The court acknowledged Dowling’s guilty plea and noted his efforts towards rehabilitation.
Dowling’s case underscores the challenges faced by individuals reintegrating into society after serving prison sentences and the importance of continued support and monitoring to prevent re-offending.
