Man Banned After Riding Quad Bike on Barmouth Beach While Over the Limit

Aug 21, 2026

A man who rode a quad bike along Barmouth beach without a licence while twice the legal drink drive limit has been banned from the road for 20 months. Ian Simpson, of 9 Redesmere Close, Timperley, Greater Manchester, appeared before Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court on 3 August.

The court heard that the 42-year-old was caught riding a Suzuki quad bike on Barmouth beach on 18 July. Tests showed that Simpson had 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

No licence or insurance

Checks showed Simpson had no licence or insurance. Magistrates disqualified Simpson from driving for 20 months and fined him £369.

Jurisdictional note: This case was heard in Wales. While the drink-drive limit in Wales is the same as that in England (35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath), it is lower in Scotland, where a separate legal framework applies.
