Man Arrested After Reporting Himself for Drink-Driving in North Yorkshire

Feb 13, 2024

In an unusual turn of events, a man in his 50s from Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, was arrested after he reported himself for drink-driving. The incident occurred shortly before midday on Monday when the man called 999, admitting he was “drink-driving and doesn’t know what he is doing.” He also mentioned having had a heavy weekend.

North Yorkshire Police quickly located his black transit van within 15 minutes of the call. Upon administering a roadside breath test, officers found the man to be more than three times over the legal alcohol limit, recording a level of 118 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms.

Following the test, the man was arrested and taken into custody. North Yorkshire Police shared the incident on social media, expressing surprise at the man’s self-report, stating, “Well, it’s not every day that this happens … a suspected drink-driver dobs themselves in to the police.”

This incident is reminiscent of a similar case in the United States last year, where a man called police to report a driver on the wrong side of the road, only to discover he was the one driving in the wrong lane and was intoxicated. Fortunately, the police intervened before any serious harm occurred.

Such incidents highlight the dangers of drink-driving and the importance of police vigilance and public awareness in preventing potential accidents.
