Research indicates that a large proportion of drivers in the UK are unaware of proposed changes to drink-driving laws in England and Wales, despite the measures forming part of the government’s newly announced road safety strategy.
The government has set out plans to tighten drink-driving rules, including lowering the legal alcohol limit for drivers. Under the proposals, the limit would be reduced from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath to 22 micrograms, which is the current limit in Scotland.
The changes are part of a wider road safety strategy that also includes proposals for mandatory eyesight tests for drivers aged over 70 and tougher penalties for seatbelt offences.
Research carried out by Confused.com suggests that only around one in four motorists are aware of the planned changes to drink-driving laws.

“Every year we can expect to see some changes to our motoring costs, guidelines and even laws, and this year is no exception. Many changes coming into effect, or proposed for this year, could see many drivers at higher risk of increased costs or penalties – especially if they’re unaware. Keeping up to date with announcements, law changes and price changes is important to prepare financially when it comes to increasing costs but also ensures you’re keeping on the right side of the law. It’s also important to remember that a lot of changes are being implemented to improve safety for drivers, such as lower drink-drive limits and harsher penalties for motoring offences. Being aware of these and ensuring you’re adhering to them will not only save you from fines but will keep you and others safer.”
The proposed reduction in drink-driving limits forms part of the Labour government’s broader road safety strategy, which aims to improve road safety outcomes through changes to driving laws, enforcement and vehicle standards.
At the time of publication, the proposals had not yet come into force and are subject to consultation and further legislative processes.
