Throughout the summer of 2024, police in major UK cities, including London, Manchester, and Birmingham, have reported a significant surge in drink and drug driving arrests. The spike in arrests has been linked to large gatherings and festivals, including celebrations surrounding Euro 2024 and other major social events. Authorities have pointed to the increased consumption of alcohol and recreational drugs at these events as a primary factor in the rise of impaired driving incidents.
In response to the growing number of arrests, police have ramped up both marked and unmarked patrols, particularly around high-risk areas near pubs, clubs, and other venues where alcohol and drug consumption is prevalent. Roadside tests have been significantly increased, with many drivers testing positive for drugs such as cannabis and cocaine, as well as being over the legal alcohol limit.
Chief Inspector Samantha Lewis of the Metropolitan Police emphasised the importance of deterrence and enforcement during these high-traffic periods. “The combination of alcohol and drugs, particularly during large social gatherings, is a recipe for disaster. Our officers are committed to catching those who make the dangerous choice to drive while impaired, and our goal is to prevent serious accidents before they happen,” she said.
Lewis also noted that impaired driving poses a serious threat to pedestrians and other road users, particularly in urban areas where foot traffic is higher. The police have encouraged members of the public to report any suspected impaired drivers and have reminded drivers of the severe penalties for being caught over the limit. These penalties include long driving bans, fines, and the possibility of imprisonment for those who cause accidents while impaired.
As the summer continues, police forces across the UK are expected to maintain their heightened focus on drink and drug driving to ensure that road safety remains a priority.
