It has been reported that a Shetland’s man has been imprisoned and banned from driving for life after being caught drink-driving for the second time within a week.
In total, this was his fourth conviction for drink driving.
The driver, Torbjorn Riise of Scalloway, admitted the offences before the court, which were described by the presiding Sheriff as: “about as spectacular a series of road traffic offending as I could imagine.”
In passing sentence, Sheriff Philip Mann stated: “For someone with your history of convictions, I cannot see any alternative to a custodial sentence.
“You put members of the public at very significant risk of harm. It was only a matter of good fortune that no harm occurred. These are two very serious matters of drink driving in a very short period of time. The second one was undertaken when it should have been obvious to you, you had offended in a spectacular fashion.”
On one occasion, a member of the public had been so concerned about Riise’s driving that they had followed his car, only to see him enter a shop and buy more alcohol. At that stage, the police were called.
Raise was disqualified from driving for life and imprisoned for 8 months. His car was also confiscated.
