The Government has announced plans to increase the sentencing powers for judges when dealing with cases of motorists who have caused death by dangerous driving.
Currently, the maximum sentence allowed for the offence is 14 years custody.
Interestingly, the average sentence handed down for cases of causing death by dangerous or careless driving in 2015 was just under 4 years custody.
The road safety charity, Brake! has openly welcomed the plans and director, Gary Rae has hailed the news as a ‘vindication’ of its efforts in influencing the change, but also said that the offence of causing death by careless driving should be scrapped. “Some of the strongest feedback we have received from the families we work with is that there is nothing careless about taking someone else’s life,” he said.
Justice Minister Sam Gyimah said it was “impossible to compensate for the death of a loved one.
“Killer drivers ruin lives. Their actions cause immeasurable pain to families, who must endure tragic, unnecessary losses.”
