A 19-year-old learner driver has been told by a judge that he has been lucky to avoid jail after police caught him drug driving while under the influence of high levels of tranquiliser ketamine.
The young motorist was pulled over on September 17, 2022, and asked to perform a roadside drug swipe. The result came back positive, with further blood tests following his arrest finding him to have 132mcg of ketamine per 100ml blood. The legal limit for drug driving – to account for accidental exposure – is 20mcg.
In addition to drug driving charges, police also charged the chip shop worker with driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
District Judge William Nelson said: “You are lucky not to be looking at custody.
“Ketamine should be nowhere near a vehicle.”
After hearing a guilty plea to drug driving and the other charges, Judge Nelson bound the man under a 12-month community order during which he must undertake 150 hours of unpaid work, rather than imposing a custodial sentence.
He was also banned from the roads for 20 months and ordered to pay a £100 fine for driving without insurance as well as £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
