A man who crashed his car while drink driving to McDonald’s for a late-night meal has appeared before the courts after calling the police himself.
Folkestone Magistrates heard that the 28-year-old defendant had been out with friends on December 9 before getting a train back to Whitstable and walking home.
Hungry after the evening’s socialising, he decided to drive to the nearest Mcdonald’s for some food, but crashed into railings on the A2290, blocking the carriageway.
He called the police himself to report the accident, and on arrival admitted to officers that he had been driving. A roadside breath test came back positive for alcohol, with subsequent analysis finding him to have 55mcg alcohol per 100ml breath. The legal limit for drink driving is 35mcg.
Prosecuting, James Nichols said that it was the man’s first offence and he had cooperated fully with police.
“He admitted he was the driver and he’d crashed into the railings and the road was blocked. He’s of previous good character,” he said.
In mitigation, the court heard that the man had only chosen to drive due to the late hour and that he didn’t want to awaken his partner by making food at home.
District Judge Justin Barron also received two references, accepting that the defendant was of exemplary character, adding that he had made a “rather serious mistake”, and did not expect to see him before the courts again.
After hearing a guilty plea to drink driving, Judge Barron banned the man from driving for 14 months, which may be reduced by a quarter on completion of the drink driving rehabilitation course. He must also pay a fine of £553 plus £85 costs and a £221 victim surcharge.
