Lambeth Council Chief Executive Steps Down After Drink and Drug Driving Charges

Aug 1, 2024

Bayo Dosunmu, the chief executive of Lambeth Council, has resigned following his arrest for drink and drug driving offences. The 46-year-old official was involved in an accident in Westminster at the end of June 2024, where he is accused of fleeing the scene after crashing his vehicle. Upon being apprehended by police, Dosunmu was charged with failing to stop at the scene, driving while under the influence of alcohol, possession of Class A drugs, and driving without valid insurance.

Dosunmu, who held the high-profile role of Lambeth’s chief executive, earned £185,000 per year. In the wake of his arrest, the council announced that Dosunmu would be taking time off, but by mid-July, it was confirmed that he would step down from his position. Fiona Connolly has since been appointed as the acting chief executive while the council prepares to begin the recruitment process for a permanent replacement.

The arrest has caused significant concern within the local government, given Dosunmu’s long history of public service. Before his role as Lambeth’s chief executive, he served in senior positions at various government bodies, including Homes England and the Welsh Government.

Dosunmu’s court date is set for August 2024, where he will face charges related to drink driving and drug possession. The incident has sparked wider discussions about leadership accountability and the responsibility of public officials to set an example, particularly in sensitive areas like drink and drug driving, which continue to be major issues across the UK.

Authorities in London have been cracking down on impaired driving, especially in the wake of increasing accidents and fatalities linked to alcohol and drug consumption. Dosunmu’s arrest has further highlighted the ongoing need for awareness and stronger deterrents to prevent such dangerous behaviour on UK roads.
