Joiner Found Six Times Over the Legal Alcohol Limit While in Charge of Van

Apr 21, 2024

Steven Murray, a 39-year-old joiner, was convicted of being in charge of his van while six times over the legal alcohol limit. The incident occurred on January 9 when Murray’s vehicle ran out of diesel at Hempriggs as he was returning home from a contract in Buckie. Instead of seeking assistance, Murray began drinking.

Police officers arrived at the scene and attempted to administer a roadside breath test, which Murray refused. However, a subsequent test at Wick Police Station revealed a breath-alcohol level of 132 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 22 micrograms.

During the trial at Wick Sheriff Court, Murray denied the charge but was found guilty. He was fined £500 and received a 10-month driving ban for the drunk-in-charge offense. Additionally, Murray admitted to refusing the initial breath test and was admonished on this charge by Sheriff Neil Wilson.

The court was informed that Murray is actively addressing his alcohol issues, and Sheriff Wilson expressed hope that Murray’s efforts to combat his drinking problem would be successful.

This case highlights the serious consequences of drink-driving and the importance of adhering to road safety regulations. Murray’s actions not only put himself at risk but also posed a danger to others on the road. The legal repercussions serve as a reminder of the severe penalties for those who choose to drive under the influence.
