A Bournemouth man has been jailed for drink driving after he sped through the middle of a roundabout and into the front of a house in Poole.
Bournemouth Crown Court heard that the 47-year-old left Bournemouth in his card and travelled to an address in Poole at 7.20 in the morning. His vehicle’s dashcam showed that he was already driving dangerously with his windscreen misted up, limiting visibility.
The defendant then travelled to a local drive-thru before returning to the address where he reached speeds of up to 93mph in a 30mph zone.
He failed to slow sufficiently as he reached a roundabout junction and struck the island before colliding with a property which caused structural damage to the home. The occupant was inside at the time and witnessed the crash.
After fleeing the scene, police found the man, who smelled of alcohol, at a Bournemouth address. He failed a roadside breath test and was arrested before officers took him to hospital as a precaution.
Around two hours after the collision, he provided a specimen of blood for analysis which was found to contain 86mcg alcohol per 100ml blood. The legal drink driving limit is 80mcg.
After pleading guilty to dangerous driving and drink driving, the judge sentenced the man to six months in prison as well as banning him from the roads for two years and six months.
PC Dave Cotterill, of the traffic unit, said: “[The defendant’s] driving on Sunday 17 November last year was extremely reckless and it is fortunate that nobody was seriously hurt by his actions.
“We are committed to tackling drink drivers who present a risk to other road users and this case is an example of the dangers that can be posed by driving the morning after consuming alcohol when you can still be over the limit and your judgement and reactions remain severely impaired.”
