A man has appeared at St Alban’s Crown Court for sentencing after a drug driving accident that led to a bus driver needing to have his leg amputated.
The court heard that on April 9 the defendant’s BMW veered onto the wrong side of the road, ploughing into an Arriva bus, loaded with passengers.
The 60-year-old driver suffered several fractures to his leg, which in the end had to be amputated, while ten other passengers onboard the bus were injured. The defendant escaped with minor injuries.
The defendant tested positive for cannabis, and police attributed the accident to his drug driving.
Detective Constable David Burstow said: “This case highlights the traumatic, life-changing effects that driving under the influence of drugs can have.
“[The defendant], who initially tried to blame the bus driver for the collision, had smoked cannabis until 3am on the day of the incident and caused this horrific crash several hours later. The law is clear, do not take drugs and drive.”
After pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, the man was jailed for two years and eight months, and banned from driving for 40 months thereafter. He will need to take an extended re-test before getting behind the wheel again.
